F O U N D E D i n 1 9 9 6 by David Yurkovich as Sleeping Giant Comics, SGC has been both a weird and wonderful endeavor. The company began with the Xeric-powered DEATH BY CHOCOLATE in 1996, a satirical secret-agent thriller that spawned three sequels, including the critically acclaimed BROCCOLI AGENDA.
Yurkovich developed THRESHOLD (later relaunched as The Super-Heroes of Philadelphia [SHOP]) in fall 1996. While deconstructionism in super-heroics had already been examined by various writers, most notably Alan Moore (WATCHMEN), Yurkovich's approach to the genre dealt with the absurdity of the basic super-hero concept. In 1999 Yurkovich began an ambitious project entitled ALTERCATIONS, which was recently offered in a 192-page DELUXE EDITION. In 2004 Yurkovich's early THRESHOLD stories were published in a collected edition by TOP SHELF PRODUCTIONS. Top Shelf published the collected DEATH BY CHOCOLATE in August 2007. David also wrote and produced MANTLO: A LIFE IN COMICS (a tribute to writer Bill Mantlo that includes previously unpublished Mantlo stories). The magazine-format project was revised in 2014 and is back in print. David and SGC co-founder Dianne Pearce are producing a series of children's books. Dianne is in writing her first novel.
In addition to his work in the comics industry, Yurkovich has written more than 100,000 words (both fiction and nonfiction) on WIDE AWAKE. He is a former contributing editor to the media web site, POP THOUGHT. David's has published two prose novels, BANANA SEAT SUMMER and GLASS ONION.
Yurkovich also produced three issues of the series NOCTURNE, which consists of prose stories and essays told through photo manipulation. He is currently working on a new prose novel, scheduled for release in 2017. In 2016 SGC became an imprint of DEVIL'S PARTY PRESS.
